Combine that with their new summer menu and giant martinis and you may think that you’re on vacation at an upscale resort. You may even see a movie star (or a reasonable facsimile thereof.)
La Ciudad A modern, artictic Mexican eatery run by two brothers, Hugo and Armando de la Rose and the site of this issue’s cover shoot.
Moody’s Pub The old granddaddy of beer gardens, Moody’s two-tiered terrace provides plenty of seating and some large tables for groups.
Navy Pier Almost all of the dozen or so dining places at Navy Pier, whether casual or fancy feature outdoor dining with the best views in the city. There are even spots where you can enjoy an outdoor repast with something (or someone) you picked up in the food court. Sure, it’s touristy, but where else would you bring out of town guests?
Oysy It’s not often that you can combine sushi, the South Loop and al fresco dining in one place. In fact this is the only place you can, and the service is great to boot.
Panino’s There area few chairs and tables outside the take-out section facing the parking lot, but the real star seating is at one of the dozen or so tables in front of the dining room, along Waveland.
Quartino is like sitting in an Italian garden enjoying homemade antipasti, except that you’re sitting on State Street with all the hustle and bustle. Be prepared to wait quite some time for a seat at this place.

Zapatista Mexican Grill The Lincoln Park sister of the South Loop fave fills its shaded patio with tables, flower-filled planters and twinkling lights for a true feel of Mexico.
On the Waterfront
What is it about gay folks and water? In most major cities the gay neighborhoods can usually be found near the closest body of water. Think about it. Both Boystown and Andersonville are lakefront adjacent neighborhoods, Manhattan’s an island, San Francisco’s a peninsula, even DuPont Circle in D.C. is home to the “P Street Beach” in Rock Creek Park. Whatever the reason, we love our waterfront locations, and Chicago’s got no shortage of waterfront dining. Let’s start south along the lakefront and head north.
Parrot Cage Restaurant
71st St. and South Shore Dr.
The former South Shore Country Club is now run by the Chicago Park District and the restaurant is a training spot for Washburne Culinary Academy students. The patio has a nice lake view, if not right on the lake.

Lake south of North Ave.

The Dock at Montrose Beach
Lake at Montrose Ave.
The 3,300 square foot patio deck is right across from the field where the gay softball teams play and just a short walk from the dog beach. And, as a bonus, there’s abundant parking
Kathy Osterman Beach aka Hollywood Beach
Lake at Hollywood Ave.
It’s just a small snack bar with rainbow Adirondack deck chairs, but the real attraction is the hotties playing volleyball at the south (gay) side of the beach.
The Waterfront Cafe
6200 north off Sheridan Rd.
Berger Park’s little patio shop hasn’t got much going for it menu-wise, but with views like this, it doesn’t need them.
Rollin’ on the River
As Chicago cleans up the what was once a toxic mess, more and more places are opening up along the banks of the Chicago River. The Riverwalk is a collection of restaurants on the south side of the river between LaSalle and Michigan. There you can find outposts of some Chicago favorites such as O’Brien’s, Robinson’s Ribs and Cyrano’s Bistro. In addition you’ll also find these spots elsewhere along the river. Fulton’s on the River, Japonais Restaurant, Dick’s Last Resort in Marina Towers and Flatwater.
Finally, if you want to dine on a boat but don’t want to go outside, check out the kitchy Port Edward Restaurant in Algonquin. The seafood restaurant takes the nautical theme to such extremes that they have a indoor floating boat.

Open only for the past six months, the vegan restaurant serves Thai food.
Victory’s Banner 2100 W Roscoe
773.665.0227 www.victorysbanner.com
A popular breakfast and lunch spot house in Roscoe Village. Try the design-your-own scramble or raspberry French toast. It’s a little hippy-dippy (sugar packets carry spiritual messages and the wait staff wear saris) but not preachy.

Restaurant listings are subject to change, make sure to call first
In Chicago, eating is a almost a sporting event. Chicago has some signature dishes, and folks root for their favorite places for these dishes almost as much as for their favorite sports teams. We’ve rounded up some of the top places to sample Chicago’s home town favorites, and before locals start writing us about places we left off, allow us to point out that we’re only including places around the city where IML visitors are likely to find themselves.
PIZZA
Yes, you can find super-thin crust gourmet pizzas (Great Lakes in Andersonville has been cited as having the world’s best pizza by GQ and received rave reviews from Food & Wine and The New York Times), but Chicago-style pizza is hearty; a knife and fork meal. Here are five of the most popular.
• Giordano’s-730 N. Rush, 6836 N. Sheridan
A double-decker stuffed pizza.
• Pizzeria Uno 29 E. Ohio and
• Pizzeria Due 619 N. Wabash
Different owners, but the same family and the same original deep dish pie.
• Lou Malnati’s-439 N. Wells
Similar to Uno/Due, w/crisper crust & chunkier sauce.
•Gino’s East of Chicago-633 N. Wells &
•Gino’s East-1111 W. Granville
Have a rabid fan base. The Granville location has had the same décor for 50 years.
ITALIAN BEEF
Truly unique to Chicago, the Italian Beef sandwich is variation on the French Dip. The options include plain or with either spicy or sweet peppers. Look like a local by asking for it “wet” (the entire sandwich dipped in the jus.) Here are three favorites.
• Al’s #1 Italian Beef-169 W. Ontario
• Mr. Beef-666 N. Orleans
• Portillo’s-100 W. Ontario (our favorite)
HOT DOG
It seems as if each city has its own style of hot dog. Here in Chicago, we’re pretty straight forward. A steamed dog on a poppy-seed bun, a little celery salt and the works (onions, relish, tomatoes, mustard and a slice of dill pickle.) Super hot sport peppers are optional, catsup is not allowed. Here are some places that do the dog justice.
• Portillo’s-100 W. Ontario
Yep, the same place as the Italian beef spot, a local mini-chain, you can’t go wrong with anything at this budget dining mecca.
• Byron’s-1017 W. Irving Park (Hot Dog Trailer)
Stumbling distance from the Halsted Street bars, but not open very late.
• The Wieners Circle-2622 N. Clark (Hot Dog Trailer)
A grilled dog and amusingly rude, but fun countermen open till the wee hours.
• Hot Doug’s-3324 N. California
Also off the beaten track, but worth a trip for any of the 18 gourmet dogs and the guilty pleasure of fries cooked in duck fat.
SIDE ORDERS
In addition to the hotly debated favorites above, there are a few Chicago institutions everyone agrees are the best.
Garrett’s Popcorn-26 W. Randolph & 625 N. Michigan, among others. Freshly made popcorn, cheddar corn and caramel corn, or try the “Chicago Mix” all three together. You’ll become addicted after one bite.
Intelligensia Coffee-3123 N. Broadway, 55 E. Randolph. Chicago’s hometown coffee roaster and café. One sip and you’ll be saying “Star-yuks!”
Rainbow Cone-11 N. Michigan (in Millennium Park) Not quite the same charm as the far south side original location, but the same delicious layering of flavors: chocolate, pistachio, strawberry, orange sherbet and a vanilla-cherry-nut blend.
XOCO-449 N. Clark. Food Network’s Top Chef Master, Rick Bayless, is behind this Mexican street food spot. Go for breakfast or late afternoon to avoid the lines.
Heaven on Seven-111 N. Wabash. A restaurant’s got to be pretty good to survive on the 7th floor of an office building. This Cajun spot is way better than pretty good. A second location at 600 N. Michigan has the same food but not as nice an ambiance.
Macy’s Food Court-111 N. State (lower level) Some of the gourmet offerings are; Frontera Fresco featuring Mexican fare from Rick Bayless (see XOCO above) and celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson’s Marc Burger as well as a deli, pastry shop and Godiva Chocolates. In case of inclement weather, take the underground Pedway from the lower level of the hotel directly to Macy’s.
