ON THE BIG SCREEN
“The Tillman Story” (The Weinstein Company) Narrated by Josh Brolin, filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev’s exceptional doc “The Tillman Story” is bound to stir up lots of emotions and debate. Model-handsome Pat Tillman went from academically excelling Arizona State football star to a multi-million dollar career in the National Football League in almost no time at all. But the events of September 11, 2001 had a profound impact on him and, in 2002, he and younger brother Kevin enlisted in the Army for a three-year stint.

He was a model soldier, earning the respect of his battalion. But the events of April 22, 2004, would change things forever. A firefight in a canyon near Magarah went horribly wrong, possibly due to over-excitement in some of the troops. Pat Tillman was killed in a barrage of gunfire.
What follows is a cover-up that reaches all the way to the highest levels of the United States government. Posthumously awarded the Silver Star and celebrated with honor at a memorial service, Tillman’s legacy became the stuff of heroic myths. That is until the military’s story began to unravel and the truth poured forth, little by little.

Bar-Lev focuses on the difference between spinning the story and setting the record straight via interviews with Tillman’s mother Donnie, his father Patrick Sr., youngest brother Richard and widow Marie, neighbors, members of his battalion members and other military officials. “The Tillman Story” is as much a tribute to the memory of Tillman, a young man cut down in the prime of his life, as it is testament to the resilience and persistence of a family who wanted nothing more than to learn the truth about the death of a loved one.

ON THE SMALL SCREEN
A musical within a movie, “The Big Gay Musical” (Embrem) takes us behind the scenes of the off-Broadway show “Adam & Steve…Just the Way God Made Them,” as well as behind the scenes of some of the cast members’ lives. Paul Daniel Robinson, who plays Adam, is a seasoned theater performer who also works at a cabaret bar called Mostly Sondheim. Inexperienced Eddie Joel Dudding, who plays Steve, is so excited about being in his first New York production that he calls his fundamentalist religious parents to share his happiness, only to have it dashed when they tell him that they plan on coming to town for opening night. The only problem is that Eddie’s not out to them.

As a cinematic device, the interweaving of the play and the musical work well together, and the musical numbers a number of which include scantily clad performers. are clever. In fact, the Effie from “Dreamgirls” homage is not to be missed. Co-directors Caspar Andreas and Fred M. Caruso prove to be a successful creative team on this unexpectedly ambitious project. DVD special features include the entire 45 minute “Adam & Steve” musical, a “Making of the Big Gay Musical” featurette with outtakes and cast and crew interviews and more.http://www.boimagazine.comBOI_Home.html16.10_Feature.html16.10_On_The_Go_files/CramFALLadFinalV2.jpg16.10_On_The_Go_files/ParlourOnClarkAd.jpg16.10_On_The_Go_files/out_cram.jpg16.10_On_The_Go_files/ModaBoutiqueAd.jpg16.10_On_The_Go_files/out_borderline.jpg16.10_On_The_Go_files/out_market_days2.jpg16.10_On_The_Go_files/out_evil.jpgshapeimage_1_link_0
