The SNAPSAINT Report
By George St. George

Just To Let You Know my email inbox has been full of invites and a couple of dates have even called, all inviting me to a hip monthly Wicker Park party called Atomic Sketch Event (ASE) held at the Evil Olive Bar (1551 W. Division Ave.). A friend described ASE as an exhibition show of sketch artists and painters and also a creative workshop open to the public, all mixed with the friendly sounds and libations of a lounge bar. I just had to check this out for myself.

Upon entering Evil Olive you can tell that this ASE is no ordinary night at the bar. Long tables are lined with ink pens, pencils and paint brushes that are used to imaginatively sketch or paint images onto sketchpads. A panel of artists as well as newcomers brings creative tools and their imaginations in order to create art while sipping on cocktails and beers. While their works get posted on the wall with very reasonable prices ranging from $5 to $50, a beautiful social interaction takes place between artists and admirers. To make the event package complete, DJ Greg Haus spins a melodic atmosphere with a mixture of soothing lounge grooves. The whole scene reminds me of the bohemian artist scene in the coffeeshops and baristas of Europe, where you can mix and mingle with talented local artists, meet cool hipsters, and even inexpensively start a collection of some amazing art.

Hosted by Brian Hofmeister, Charles Joly and Dominic Cesario, the monthly live art gathering that is ASE features Chicago-based artists, painters, and illustrators. They participate in a month-long group exhibit of their work as well as create, post and sell works on the Evil Olive's walls throughout the night.

As Hofmeister puts it, "Atomic Sketch is a great event for artists, art enthusiasts, and collectors. Any artist is welcome to come and bring materials and set up shop, make art, and post those works for sale right then and there! So bring your pens and pencils and paper and paint and get creative."

While typically scheduled for the last Thursday of each month, the year-end edition of ASE will take place on December 18, 6pm-10pm. This special holiday installment's panel will consist of 12 artists, including Kyle Francis Harter, Blütt, Ethan Hutchinson, Joyce Vallejo, Sara Renae Jones, David Johnson, Czr Prz, SUPAQOOT and several others.
