If you are a true house-head with a penchant for the jazzy smoothness offered by the deep house genre, then the name of Jay-J should be very familiar to you. His real name is Jay Hernandez and he has been credited with being a part of the pioneering brigade that developed the soulful San Francisco/West Coast house music sound and scene. As I have built my personal deep house library over the years, Jay-J's name has been seemingly omnipresent with credits as prominent and as plentiful as those for Marques Wyatt, Mark Farina, Kaskade, and Miguel Migs. As he gains in popularity amongst the global listening and dancing pubic, it is sure to soon
match the worldwide respect and accolades he already gets from his DJing, producing, and remixing peers.
Jay-J has established a strong reputation as one of the producers with that special something that can transform an ordinary tune into a truly special track. His natural dance music sensibilities, astute production abilities, and access to a world class recording facility, has led numerous record labels from around the world to his doorstep seeking the use his services. Over the years, he has had releases and credits on the Who's Who list of dance music labels, including Defected Records, King Street, Afterhours, Om Records, Naked Music, Yoshitoshi, and Loveslap! Recordings. Additionally, Jay-J owns his own studio, Moulton Records, which has had a significant influence on the sound of San Francisco's dance music. With its state of the art production facility, Moulton has become known as the place to make superior quality music, both electronic and otherwise.
Jay-J's long-time prowess as a producer and remixer has been matched over the years by his achievements and popularity in the DJ booth. He has made a name for himself as a smooth and technically excellent mixer who packs his crate with energy filled deep and soulful sounds. Minted with the Jay-J style stamp, his live DJ sets include energetic garage, smooth deep house, and pumping disco tracks. While on the dance floor it is not uncommon to hear Jay-J playing cuts from the catalogs of Soulfuric Records and Defected Records as well as music produced by the likes of Kenny Dope, Soul Fuzion, and Copyright.
His music selection, mixing, and programming while in the DJ booth has resulted in his San Francisco 1015 Folsom
residency "Breathe Deep" attaining international acclaim and recognition. It was reviewed in the club scene section of UK based DJ Magazine as "gorgeous deep and jazzy house grooves for a friendly crowd of serious dancers".
In addition to his residencies at San Francisco's hottest parties, Jay-J has held residencies in Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, Canada. Not content with just sharing his DJing abilities with the West Coast clubs of North America, he has toured extensively around the United States and beyond. Having been referred to as the hardest working DJ in San Francisco, Jay-J was also a member of Billboard Magazine's Dance Music Panel, an official recognition of his hard work and commitment to dance music.
