Just 25 minutes from the loop on Lake Shore Drive South, Whiting Indiana, offers a gay mans dream downtown. Whiting Indiana has some very unique shops and a beautifully restored theater with a dome ceiling and all hand painted relief work. But stuck in the middle of this charming town is a place called Winey Beach Café located at 1350 119th St. Designed with Key West in mind this fabulous little café offers up some of the coolest cuisine this side of the Mississippi River.
Stepping into this quaint café, bright colors and relaxed atmosphere is just like vacation. With Island music, playing in the background, we were greeted and told "Just sit anywhere you want". There was no stress at all as she gave us the menu and offered us something to drink from their bar, featuring an extensive selection of rums, or something a little softer. I had the house coffee "Jamaican Me Crazy" roast, served in a French press; it doesn't get any better than that, except the food!
Winey Beach Café specializes in Floibbean cuisine, their Crab Cake appetizers are a delight. John Sopo, owner and chef flies to Key West and hand selects the lobsters, and flies them back to Whiting, the other seafood and meats are all fresh and cooked at the time that you order them. The Scallops are seared in a Vanilla Bean paste and served with pasta, and all entrée's are served with a pineapple salsa and a choice of whipped sweet potato's or rice and beans. And of course there is dessert, my favorite part! John makes fresh Key Lime Pie, Mango Key Lime Tarts and has a delicious dish called Winey Beach Rocks shipped in from Hawaii that are like ice cream dumplings, you have to try them to believe them! Winey Beach Café offers live music most Saturday nights and is closed on Monday. It is certainly worth the short drive down picturesque LSD South to Whiting for Dinner at Winey Beach Café and a walk across the street to the beautiful Hoosier Theater for a movie for $5.00. So, c'mon mon, you deserve it! Call 219-659-1466 to find out more!
