WELCOME TO MARKET DAYS 2008JENNIFER HOLLIDAY AND EXPOSÉ TO HEADLINE
THIS YEAR'S EVENT
On August 9th and 10th, hundreds of thousands of people from Chicago and across the country will converge on Halsted Street to celebrate the 27th Annual Northalsted Market Days, the largest two-day street fair in the Midwest. Market Days annually lives up to its reputation as one of the country's finest festivals using a winning combination of non-stop music, more than 200 artisans & vendors, unparalleled people-watching, tasty food, usually sunny warm weather, and thirst-quenching cold beverages.
Held in one of the city's most diverse and vibrant neighborhoods, Market Days spans six city blocks, has 17 entrance gates and features music performed by more than 30 musical acts on four different stages. This year's weekend headliner is the legendary Jennifer Holliday, the 2-time Grammy winner and "original Dreamgirl." Other stage acts scheduled to perform include:
· Disco diva Linda Clifford
· '80s/'90s dance fave ExposÉ
· Budding pop sensation Ferras
· ROTC and Chicago Spirit Brigade
· The Pink Floyd tribute band Think Floyd
· Acclaimed singer/songwriter Eric Himan
· Chicago's own Dot Dot Dot and 16 Candles
· All-girl rockers Catfight
· Jazz combos ClarkStreet and SoulioCheck the Entertainment Schedule on the following pages to find out the day, time and place for all performances.
In addition to the impressive musical line-up, another huge drawing card to Market Days is the presence of a select and eclectic mix of artisans who hail from Chicago, the Midwest and beyond. They join a wide range of specialty merchants to show and sell their unique wares throughout the weekend. So if you're in the market to purchase a high-end piece of art or just interested in more pedestrian retail items, chances are good that you'll find what you are looking for at Market Days. Consult the Vendor Listings and Map in this guide to figure out from whom you want to buy and where they are located.
Fueling this year's Market Days attendees will be a diverse group of Food Vendors presenting a global mix of cuisines and a vast array of offerings. While typical festival fare such as hamburgers, hot dogs and brats will be easy enough to find, unique food items such as Lobster & Crab Po' Boy Sandwiches, Paella, Veggie Cheese Dogs, Egg Rolls, Empanadas, Jerk Chicken and Pierogi will also be available. Be sure to craft your own personal weekend tasting menu with the aid of the Market Days Dining Directory in this Program Guide. The final aspect of Market Days that makes it a "can't miss" event is the large and enthusiastic crowds that show up year after year. Market Days brings together people from all walks of life, of different races, genders, ethnic backgrounds, and sexual orientations, demonstrating proudly that Chicago is a world-class city with a diverse, friendly, and fun-loving population.
The Music. The Vendors. The Artisans. The Food. The People. Market Days is THE event of the summer not to be missed!
