What artist or artists inspire your work?
Of course I am influenced by many collage and assemblage artists like Romare Bearden and Joseph Cornell, but I also like the surrealists. Max Ernst is one of my favorites. When did you decide that this was your calling in life?
My father is an artist who designs and builds theatrical props. Since I practically grew up in his studio, I dont remember a time when I didnt think of myself as an artist. What mediums do you use?
I work in mixed media so I use anything from melted crayons to rusty bottle caps. What are your favorite mediums?
Before I started doing collage I was a painter, and paint is still my favorite medium. People often tell me that my collages look like paintings. What would your dream exhibition be?
HmmmÐI would like to build a time machine and go back to Paris in the 1930s so I could be in a surrealist show with Andre Breton and his pals. That makes me seem really selfish, doesnt it? I mean, If I really did manage to figure out how the space- time continuum works, shouldnt I assassinate Hitler or something? Ok, after Ive had a little chat with Picasso over a nice glass of merlot, Ill warn everyone at the art opening about the impending Nazi doom. Then Ill go back to the Stone Age and give women the right to vote before men, and thenÐ.
What do you have planned for the future?
These are very good questions! In the future, politicians will have lights installed in their foreheads that will flash when they are lying, and America will no longer have a two party system because all the Republicans will have traveled back in time to 1955.Where can we see your work?
Right now I have a few pieces up at Piece Restaurant at 1927 W. North Av and Ill be showing at the Bucktown Art Fest at 2200 N. Oakley on Aug 27 & 28. Ill also be in Around the Coyote at 1935 W. North Av., Sept 9-11. You can also check out my website at kasscopeland.com
