Pride Weekend After-thoughts
Has the streak of Chicago Pride Parades with no rain ended? It sprinkled on and off during the first half hour or so of this 37th edition, but the sun was actually shining through by the end. I'm not sure who is the official Chicago compiler of the LGBT almanac, but we will await their press release with the "rain/no rain" designation. Regardless, it was still a good parade and fun times had by all.
The pretty young woman you saw performing at Pride Fest and riding in a float during the parade was the talented Jenna Drey, who just released a new album called One Step Further (Audio One Records). Her dance single "Why Should I Believe You" is making its way up the chart with the Love To Infinity Remix clicking on all cylinders.
Why the police were so quick to shut down all music being played out onto Halsted Street immediately after the parade concluded is a mystery. With the bars filled to capacity and the street kept closed to traffic for no less than three hours after the parade, it would seemingly make sense to keep the street festival atmosphere going for at least a little while. Just my opinion.
Another pretty young woman's face that you saw during the weekend not in person but on posters and hand fans was a very familiar one: Christina Aguilera. She's got a new album coming out in August and the first single, "Ain't No Other Man," is getting mucho buzz and radio airplay. While fellow mouseketeer Britney is busy getting knocked up and backing her hubby's rap career, Christina is full steam ahead with a career that seemingly knows no bounds.
Not Really "Out", But Very In!
Ultra Records has released a new mixed compilation CD called Out Anthems mixed by DJ Ricardo. I guess they chose this name and used the sexy shirtless cover model to appeal to the gay market. In my estimation they missed the mark somewhat in that the tracks on this mix really aren't your typical gay anthems. However, this CD is spot-on in terms of being a first-rate dance music compilation: actually the best one I've heard in quite a long time with tracks by David Morales, Roger Sanchez, Freemasons, and Jonathan Peters. They may have had the boyz in mind when developing the marketing strategy for this mix but in fact it is for - and should be owned by all serious dance music fans.
We call it "being slutty"
The coolest song on a television is the jam that's used on the Verizon commercial.Surprising to many, the voice behind that rap track called "Promiscuous" is Nelly Furtado and the song is actually a duet with Timbaland, best known for his work Missy Elliott. "Promiscuous" is the first single from Furtado's new album Loose (Geffen), a 13-track offering that has multi-platinum written all over it. The new CD has sounds from the R&B, Latino pop, and reggaeton genres and as well contains 1980s-influenced electronica. Furtado describes the collective of songs on Loose as body music: an apt description as there will be plenty of dancing and swerving of hips upon listening to it. This effort from Furtado has it all and is sure to propel her into superstardom.
