Just To Let You Know Spring time in Chicago is here and of course that means eating outside at your favorite patio restaurants, baseball games at Wrigley and U.S. Cellular, and just stripping down to your Andrew Christians and heading for the beach.
I kicked off my spring of events with a premiere party for the new film Royal Kill (starring Eric Roberts and the late Pat Morita) at Bentley Gold Coast (the posh upscale auto dealership at 834 N. Rush St.). My friend Joey Majumdar, creative director of the movie, invited me to the event which he co-hosted with Candace Jordan, philanthropist and former Playboy model; newscaster Robin Robinson; and Chicago socialite Hazel Barr. Most Gold Coast parties are attended by an older and stuffier set; however, this crowd at Bentley Gold Coast a venue I'd not been to previously - was actually a fun one that was hip, young and fresh. Of course the Bentley automobiles stole the show, but the Asian and French infused hors d' oeuvres were a major highlight. Kudos to Joey and Candace for throwing a kick ass party.
The Guerilla Gay Bar had its monthly party over at the Weather Mark Tavern on 15th and S. Michigan Avenue and I decided to stop by and check it out. So apparently, my passport is good enough to get into France, the U.K., Ireland and Australia but not the Weather Mark Tavern in the South Loop. The doorman decided to inform me that a passport is not a valid form of identification to enter a bar or club and refused me entry. I really felt like I was trying to explain myself to a cockroach. However, no fear, the owner, Mark, came to my rescue and explained to the doorman how a passport was valid. He even bought my friends a round of drinks. The night was fun but way too crowded. I do appreciate the idea of the Guerilla Gay Bar promoting different venues around the city for gays to explore that are outside of typical gay neighborhood hang outs. However, at this particular place, I'm not a huge fan of over -priced drinks being served in a plastic cups and no coat check. Overall, I would recommend that anyone looking for change in their nightlife scene but still wanting a taste of familiarity check out the Guerilla Gay Bar (you can find them on Facebook).
Erin Creaney owns Studio-808, which is an online boutique that features and cultivates developing, local high-fashion designers. Creaney shot me an invite of her spring kick-off fashion networking party on the rooftop patio of Citizen Bar (354 W. Erie St.) in River North, right off the CTA's Brown Line Chicago stop. My friends and I loved Citizen Bar. This was all of our first times there and it really felt like we were at a party in Malibu, CA. From the endless drinks to the stylish crowd, I hardly doubt that any real networking got done. The weather was too beautiful and the drinks too strong to talk business. So we just partied.
Also,be sure to check out the new Rockit Bar & Grill in Wrigleyville (3700 N Clark), where I recently had appetizers and drinks with a friend. We both had a great time and enjoyed the background 80s music. Unlike its more loft-like downtown location, this one has a sportier vibe sitting as it does in the shadow of Wrigley Field. Order the buffalo barbeque wings as a starterthey're to die for.
If spring is already this fun then I can't wait for what summer has in store for me. Until next time, always use protectionsunscreen that is and be sure to drink a margarita for me!
