Just
To Let You Know I've been exploring
an often overlooked but essential side of nightlife fun in our
Boystown community. The buzz around town is a comedy troupe
called The Sarcastic Squad performing The Pre After-Party
Show hosted by Berlin Nightclub with stand-up comedians
Adam Guerino (the groups founder), Eric Lutz (manic
musical improviser), Beth Spelling (finalist in "National
Funniest Woman Competition"), Mike Lee (Guitar and
Songwriting jokester) and Cameron Esposito (international
stand-up sensation). An interactive event, the Squad uses two
dueling stages facing each other and places the audience at the
center of the hysterical dialogue. After amazing reviews the
show is scheduled for May 29 and June 26 at Berlin. Showtime
is 10pm-11:30pm with a $5 cover. For those interested in a dose
of hilarious fun visit their website: www.thesarcasticsquad.com.
Guerino
is also involved in a play that examines bedroom humor called
Mattress Matters starting on June 18 at Dank
Haus at 4740 N. Western Avenue. The show take place in the
bedroom and features a cast of characters with various sexualities
and relationships, so it promises to have something for everyone.
May 7th was a
busy night for charity fundraisers. I started off at the River
East Arts Center for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago's
gala fundraiser "Make a Statement: Design for a Cure".
The party featured a spectacular fashion show hosted by the
Chicago fashion community and celebrity guests Jack Mackenroth
of Project Runway fame and radio personality Heidi
Hess. The evening climaxed with a runway show of fashions
by Akira Chicago, Heidi Hess, Kate Boggiano, Kwabena,
Lara Miller, Serpico, SkinStinct and Universal
Gear. This fashion event is one of many fundraisers held
by the AIDS Foundation Of Chicago throughout the year. For upcoming
charity events visit their website at www.aidschicago.org.
After an evening
of designers and martinis, I headed off to Salvage One
at 1840 W. Hubbard Steet for "The Wonka Ball,"
a benefit for About Face Theatre. Wonka Ball was a lively
dance party with nibbles from some of Chicago's top caterers
and rocking sample presentations of the hit musical Hedwig
and the Angry Inch now extended through May 31st.
At
the About Face event I ran into my thespian friend Benjamin
who hosted his own fundraiser called "Has Anybody Seen
My Dignity?" Benjamin is a strikingly handsome actor
who starred in Larry Kramer's play Just Say No
with Alexandra Billings and US Gold Medalist diver Greg Louganis,
Take Me Out at the Steppenwolf and TV's Will
and Grace. Benjamin sacrificed his clean cut image in
the name of charity, participating in a week of sensationally
scandalous contests in Boystown such as Roscoe's "Wet
Boxer Contest" and "Lube Wresting"
at Hydrate. Triumphing in every competition, Benjamin
donated all of his $1,200 in winnings to About Face Theatre which
was then matched by an anonymous donor. For upcoming shows at
About Face Theatre visit their website www.aboutfacetheatre.com.
