"He's A Porn Star!" By Byrd Bardot
Recently, I've been reacquainted with a dear old friend: Chicagoan Derek da Silva. We met up at a café to catch up and he told me about the punk band he's in, being a member of a corporate society, his vegetarianism, and being involved with the BDSM community. Yes, the years have flown by, but not much has changed with Derek, except that now he's also a PORN STAR! OMG! His latest film debuts at IML. It's called "Folsom Prison," the next in a line of extreme fetish films by TitanMen!
Byrd Bardot (BB): What made you get into porn?
Derek da Silva (DdS): I had this fantasy as to what it would be like to do porn; as do many others. I was in my mid-30s kind of looking at it like 'Well, this body could probably do this for a while bit longer. So if I'm going to do porn I should do it now because in a few years I'd be too old to get any work in this industry.' I'm really not into watching porn myself but there's this company called Shotgun that does CBT (Cock and Ball Torture) videos I really liked and the director of those videos was also the "Top" in them. I thought to myself that I would really like to do a scene with this guy, and of course doing a scene with him meant doing it on video. That's how I got my start. He beat my balls until they were swollen and I loved it because I'm a total masochist and sadist. And from there I just started doing BDSM fetish videos.BB: And, now you're with TitanMen?
DdS: Yea, I applied with Titan for their new fetish line of videos: Folsom. My first film with them was called "Folsom Filth." I even got to be the coverboy! But nobody really knew it because I wore this mask and wild dog eye contacts that made me totally unrecognizable! I played my master's henchman. In the film I abduct Patrick O'Connor, chain him to chair, strip him, and then torment him. It's really crazy! The films I do are extreme!BB: I've been hearing about a reputation
DdS: Yea, "Folsom Filth" gave me this reputation as a crazy insane brute.BB: In the new film "Folsom Prison," your real life sir, Tony Buff, plays the corrupt prison guard who exploits the inmates for his own sexual perversions. The group scene beat down, just before the gangbang, is really physical and brutal! Did you get hurt?
DdS: Hurt, Yes! Injured, No!BB: Huh?
DdS: Hurt means the feeling of pain. After that scene I had minor bruises. I was really being punched and kicked straight on. Some of the actors really never did such a scene before, so we coerced them to let loose and once they did it was pretty cool. I did end up having a bruise above my kidney, which wasn't cool, but we like to say 'extreme' is like a contact sport! I do enjoy pain but I don't want injuries that are going to dog me for days or months to come! It's just like when you play football; injuries are a possibility.BB: Are there many of re-takes?
DdS: In that scene from "Folsom Prison" during the first take, the guys just weren't hitting me hard enough! I'm like, "You guys have to beat the crap out me!" I do martial arts as my sport. So, I'm use to getting hit. It really doesn't faze me, just as long as the punch isn't so hard that it injures me. Porn is fun, but making it can get pretty boring and tedious. A 20-minute scene can take many hours to film.BB: So, how does one keep themselves interested in what their trying to achieve on film?
DdS: You really have to keep your head in the scene the whole time. That's part of the talent of being a porn actor. The good ones are able to maintain a high level of sexual energy, continuing to be turned on by what they're doing and conveying that to the camera even though they're dealing with lighting, someone hanging over them with a microphone, and all sorts of other distractions that the viewers just aren't aware of. It's about the viewers' fantasies, not about the actors' fantasies.
BB: Has the media (film reviewers) accepted these types of extreme fetish films? Do you think it frightens them; because it does push the envelope?
DdS: Oh, I think it most definitely does frighten them. Certainly some of my movies get very hostile reactions from reviewers. I've read reviews that the bottom was clearly on drugs! I don't do drugs when I play and haven't done any drugs since I was a teenager. The reviewers have said stuff like 'He was high. He's on drugs.' Or, they suggest that I was coerced into doing a scene; but often times, the scene was my idea. One reviewer suggested that this type of violent porn was evil, dark, wrong, and asked, 'Where is the love?' But, they don't pick up that I'm doing the scene with one of my best buddies, Tovar, and with my life sir, Tony, who I love very much. I was in a very comfortable environment. These are all people that I love and trust. Yes, it's something extreme but there is real love in that too!BB: What do you think about "Gay for Pay"?
DsD: Most of the guys that I've personally met have been bisexual. If that's what someone wants to watch and the so called "straight guy" wants to provide that product, that's fine. I'd rather celebrate Queer ideologies. I don't really understand the whole fascination with straight men.BB: You and Tony Buff are doing a PSA about the four rules not to break in safe BDSM sex?
DsD: Yes, it's going to be post on www.TonyBuff.Com. The four rules not to break are:
1. Never leaving someone unattended when they are bound.
2. Breathing control or affixation should never be done when alone or left unattended.
3. Never play while messed up! Never mix drugs and alcohol with BDSM. It makes you unaware of what you are doing as a top.
4. Never have unsafe sex.For more info about Derek, check out his Myspace page: www.MySpace.com/DerekdaSilva
