On Sheffield Avenue, right by Wrigley Field, lies a swank supper club. The plush red velvet interior and the mood lighting caresses you. Once you are in, strangers become friends and friends may become lovers. It is a recipe that is called mystique. This quaint lounge is owned by a woman with a great vision, Beth Berlin has shared with us some of what makes the Pepper Lounge a Hot Spot in Chicago's Dining Hall of fame
What gives Pepper Lounge its flare?
I think it is really a combination of many different elements, depending on the given moment. But the flare really comes from the people. Our customer make the experience whatever they want it to be; intimate and cozy or a lively party. People walk in the door strangers and leave as best friends. It is a phenomenon that I have never been able to explain or duplicate.Tell us about the rebirth of brunch, what makes it special?
We stay open 2 hours later than most places, giving those who went out the night before a chance to sleep late and still partake in Brunch, my favorite meal of the day. Who wants to rush around on a Sunday morning Sundays are a day to relax and take it easy. That is what makes it such a great day. And, oh and the food, well it is amazing. The crème Brule French toast - yummy!!!!
How long has Pepper Lounge been in business?
We opened our doors in November of 1993. Wow, almost 12 years ago! We have seen a lot of strange and wonderful things over the years it has been incredible to be a part of so many people's lives.
How often does your menu change?
The menu changes slightly ever season, depending on availability of seafood and produce. However there is about 50% of the menu that only changes once a year and than 10% that never changes.
What do have planned for the future of Pepper Lounge?
The future.. I never know.
I do not plan further than today -
That way I don't disappoint myself. What else do you want our readers to know?
Well, we talked about brunch, a bit of history and the future.
What else is there? Summer is coming so excited, finally.
Nothing like summer in Chicago so don't forget about our garden, it is very urban dining under the stars is always worth waiting out the dreary winter months.
