Just
To Let You Know Chicago Celebutantes seldom allow a few single
digit temperatures to get in our way of a festive night on the
town. While many of us are tempted to surrender to our cozy
domestic confines, we remind ourselves that any recession the
mass media condemns us to is really all the more reason to venture
toward the bright lights of a favorite club and regale in the
many cultural and friendly amusements our great city has to offer.
This reporter was not about to let a few seasonal shivers and
economic pitfalls stop the party. So off we go....

My date Carlos
and I ventured out to Scarlet to celebrate the birthday party
of Chi-town's reigning "Queen of the Scene" Miss Mimi Marks. The soiree was hosted
by Startender Johnathin
and featured
dazzling cabaret performances by the buxom divas "Jennifer Holiday
Chanel"
and "Maxxie
Chanel."
Miss Mimi held court with friends all evening, proving to us
that this Baton showgirl and 2X awarded
Miss
Continental
"knock-out" has a smile, and a tiara, that still beams
brightly like the supernova she is.
Boxboy Rich mentioned to me earlier
in the night that legendary House Music DJs Frankie Knuckles and Ralphi Rosario were spinning fierce beats at Smart Bar; a no cover gig sponsored by The Red Bull Music
Academy.
So off we went. When we arrived every scenester in the city
was there wrapping themselves in queue around the block of the
Clark Street dance palace. Once inside the club you could not
help but surrender to the infectious dance floor vibe created
by the genius of these two music demigods.

Club personalities
Jo-Jo and Sal-E called and invited my friend Bill Haddad and I to the art show
"Getting into Face" by Photographer Bernard Colbert at the University Club of Chicago's Twelfth Floor
Gallery.
Colbert did a splendid collaborative job of capturing these two
colorful characters in all their glitter, glamour and glory before
stepping out into the night, surprising us each time with their
ability to re-invent themselves as superstars. Colbert's images
utilizes the Lambda
Print photographic
process, a digital color laser technology on photographic paper
and is every bit as spectacular as conventional photography.
With the colors so flawless and vibrant in these portraits, one
has to be reminded that the costumes these celebrity club kids
adorned themselves in were just as ingenious as the photographer
who captured them. This University Club exhibit, which is soon
to be an international traveling exhibition, is exclusive to
members only; however, Colbert's photos can be viewed online
at www.gettingintoface.com or www.colbertimages.com.
After
the photo exhibit, Bill and I raced down to The Center on Halsted to catch the About Face Theatre production of "Stupid Kids" by John C. Russell. A brilliant play that portrays the
often exciting, sometimes awkward search for sexual identity
and self expression of rebellious high schoolers in the 1980s,
it is contrasted by a "shadow cast" of modern characters
representing the more liberal and tolerant adolescent experience
in the year 2009 with the playful current day YouTube and text
messaging. "Stupid Kids" will be performed at the Center
on Halsted through March 8. For ticket info visit www.aboutfacetheatre.com
or call 866-811-4111.
