Three Grams Please
Well, that time of the year has come and gone again, when the music industry gets together at its Grammy Awards to celebrate the achievements of the previous year in a large number of categories. The 51st edition of the Grammys recently took place, airing on CBS, and among the various awards presented were three of particular interest to me and many others involved in the global dance music industry: the Dance Grammys for Best Dance Recording, Best Electronic/Dance Album; and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. Let's take a look at the nominees for these categories and whether my choices matched the actual winners.

Best Dance Recording

"Harder Better Faster Stronger"
by Daft Punk (Virgin Records)

"Ready For The Floor"
by Hot Chip (Astralwerks/DFA)

"Just Dance"
by Lady Gaga & Colby O'Donis (Streamline/Interscope/Kon Live)

"Give It 2 Me"
by Madonna (Warner Bros.)

"Disturbia"
by Rihanna (Def Jam)

"Black & Gold"
by Sam Sparro
(Universal Republic Records)

This is an interesting category that includes two pop superstars, the a legendary electronica group (Daft Punk), an underground dance act that is no longer underground (Lady Gaga), and two very hot global dance artists that haven't quite yet caught on with gay clubbers (Hot Chip and Sam Sparro). While I thought "Just Dance" was the most deserving, Daft Punk picked up the Grammy. The sad thing is that this song won probably due in large part to a hip-hop artist, Kanye West, sampling it on his latest hit single and album.

Best Electronic/Dance Album

New York City
by Brazilian Girls (Verve Forecast)

Alive 2007
by Daft Punk (Virgin Records)

Bring Ya To The Brink
by Cyndi Lauper (Epic)

X
by Kylie Minogue
(Capitol/Astralwerks)

Last Night
by Moby (Mute)

Robyn
by Robyn
(Konichiwa/Cherrytree/Interscope)

Despite Robyn's very successful return to the dance music world, and Moby proving once again he has true skills and talent, this was thought to be a 2-horse race between Kylie and Cyndi, two faves of the GLBT community who both produced excellent dance albums. I would have gone with Lauper, because the album really is very good, but the Daft Punk lifetime achievement recognition continued with their second Grammy win of the night.

Best Remixed Recording,
Non-Classical (A Remixer's Award)

"Closer"
by Ne-Yo - StoneBridge Radio Edit (Def Jam) Remixer: StoneBridge

"Electric Feel"
by MGMT - Justice Remix (Columbia)
Remixer: Justice

"4 Minutes"
by Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake - Junkie XL Remix (Warner Bros.)
Remixer: Junkie XL

"Just Fine"
by Mary J. Blige - Moto Blanco Remix (Geffen) Remixer: Moto Blanco

"The Longest Road"
by Morgan Page featuring Lissie - Deadmau5 Remix (Nettwerk)
Remixer: Deadmau5

This is a really difficult category for me to pick because my two favorite tracks of the bunch, "Just Fine" and "Closer," were already such strong songs in their original album versions, it could be argued that the remixers really didn't have much to do. I can't really go with "4 Minutes" because I think there were stronger remix efforts of this song that deserved to be nominated ahead of the Junkie XL treatment. So I thought maybe one of the hottest artist/remixer in dance music this past year, Deadmau5, might get the nod. Well, I was wrong again as it looks like the three pop remixes may have split the vote, thus allowing Justice to get in there to grab the trophy for their work on Electric Feel by MGMT.
