A Look At The Dance Grammys
The 49th Annual Grammy Awards are being held on February 11th in Los Angeles and I thought I'd take a look at the three dance music categories and share some of my thoughts.

Nominees for Best Dance Recording
"Suffer Well" by Depeche Mode
"Ooh La La" by Goldfrapp
"Get Together" by Madonna
"I'm With Stupid" by Pet Shop Boys
"Sexy Back" by Justin Timberlake & Timbaland

This is a curious list of nominees that is much too commercial in my estimation. And while I'd love to see Goldfrapp take home the trophy, the most commercial song in the group, "SexyBack", is probably the most deserving to win the Grammy among the five. When Justin's funky infectious song is played in any of its various forms and versions - folks dance enthusiastically to it. Or at the very least vigorously nod their heads.

Nominees for Best Electronic/Dance Album --
SUPERNATURE Goldfrapp
CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR Madonna
A LIVELY MIND Oakenfold
FUNDAMENTAL - Pet Shop Boys
THE GARDEN - Zero 7

This is probably a two horse race between Goldfrapp and Madonna. Again, it would be nice to see Goldfrapp win, but Madge has had several huge club hits from CONFESSIONS that will most likely propel her to the podium. Finally, be on the lookout for Oakenfold as a possible dark-horse winner as some in the industry may be pushing for him to win as a tribute to his career in electronica.

Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical
"Be Without You" (Moto Blanco Vocal Mix) - Mary J. Blige
"Damage Thorn" (Buick Project Remix) - Tiefschwarz & Tracey Thorn
"Déjà vu" (Freemasons Club Mix) Beyoncé
"Talk" (Thin White Duke Mix) Coldplay
"World Hold On" (E-Smoove Remix) Bob Sinclar

While "World Hold On" is a favorite among many house-heads the world over, the power of hip-hop will most likely lead to a well-deserved win by either Moto Blanco or Freemasons for the best remixer award. Moto Blanco is worthy because they took a strong original track by Mark J. Blige and turned it into a popular dance floor anthem with a great energy. The duo of Russell Small and James Wiltshire, aka Freemasons, may be even more deserving of recognition for their alchemist achievement on "Déjà Vu," a screechy mess of a song on the album that they somehow managed to make enjoyable for the dance market. This is arguably the Freemasons best ever remixing effort.

New CD Pick for Valentine's Day
The Valentine's CD suggestion is the much more modern LET'S DO IT! [Climax Music] by the super sexy Noa Tylo. This is Tylo's sophomore effort and it contains 8 original tracks, several of which he describes as "sexually-charged reinterpretations of classic 90s pop and R&B dance sounds infused with modern beats." As a bonus, the CD also includes 8 versions of the title track mixed by the likes of Montreal DJ Mark Anthony, The UK's Afroboogie, and LA-based Scott Anderson from Solar City.
