Profile

Artist Derek Setterlund is a 41-year-old native of Chicago's North Shore who has had an interesting and varied adult work history that even includes a stint as a butler. However, the most interesting aspect of Setterlund's life is his current blossoming artistic career, creating Picasso-esque abstract works that are finding homes in collections nationwide.

Setterlund

The son of hippie parents who nurtured his interest in the visual arts, Setterlund grew up in suburban Lindenhurst and has lived most of his life in the Chicago area. In recent years Setterlund has experienced his greatest success with a whimsical playing card series while working with his favorite medium: pastels. These 15 x 20 inch paintings on paper are often framed and used to decorate the game room their owner. Setterlund also creates figure drawings on paper as well as large oil canvas paintings. These oil paintings are non-objective geometric pieces inspired by Charles Green Shaw, a founding member of the American Abstract Artists a group dedicated to advancing Picasso's avant-garde style in the United States.

Setterlund hopes that "good art" is what he brings to the art world, be it in museums, galleries, or people's homes. His works are scattered in collections throughout the country from coast to coast and are available in Chicago at The Leigh Gallery at 3306 North Halsted. Setterlund can also be commissioned for custom work and contacted directly at dsettart@yahoo.com.
