JTLYK - THE SNAPSAINT REPORT
By George St. George
Just To Let You Know An event that celebrates one of the most significant
aspects of Chicago's nightlife, namely the House music scene
for which the city is famous, is "Industry Tuesdays"
at Lumen Nightclub (839 W. Fulton Market). The weekly
party caters to all aspects of the industry - from club owners
and managers to door and wait staff to bartenders and barbacks
- and features local DJs who play a major part in the house music
scene and solidify the city's global reputation as "the
home of house music." Not solely for the enjoyment of industry
types, regulars at Industry Tuesdays also include lounge cats
and club scenesters who are always on the prowl for good music,
a good party, and a good time.
Part
of what makes Industry Tuesdays special is the fact that Lumen
is located in Chicago's historic Fulton Market District,
the hippest design and cultural corridor in the city. The nightclub,
a converted 19th century meat packing factory, is situated amidst
the trendiest of design studios, bars and restaurants that all
co-exist with warehouses and factories, some of which have been
luxuriously rehabbed into lofts and art galleries. This is Chicago's
version of the "SoHo Effect," an urban trend of redesigning
a historical factory district into an cosmopolitan attraction
of art, culture and excitement. The concept was first introduced
in the SoHo section of NYC and has been observed in several major
cities around the U.S.
Aptly
living up to its name, Lumen glows brightly with its uber
modern lighting and design. It features 5,000 square feet of
space that's adorned with modular furniture and a colossal custom-made
LED ceiling luminaire. This cutting-edge interactive lighting
system is a signature element of the club and was designed by
Peter Gogarty to continually change the mood and ambience of
this grand lounge based on various inputs including the beat
of the music. Add to this scene legendary Chicago House music
DJs such as Maurice Joshua and John Curley and
then mix in the Snow Queen Vodka Martini, made with muddled fresh
organic cucumber and ginger, and the result is a lounge that
rivals the Manhattan warehouses turned hipster havens.
Describing
the event's music, host and promoter Miguel Castro said, "House
music now encompasses a wide range of styles. I like to stay
true to good old Chicago style house music, melodic with the
occasional vocal and upbeat tempo. I describe the night as Unpretentious
cool."
Industry Tuesdays has a talented
start to 2009 with a lineup that features Grammy Award winning
Producer / DJ Maurice Joshua (January 13), Bear Who (January
20), and Mark Grant (January 27) . Lumen's resident DJ is Joey
Swanson, aka JustJoey, and the weekly gathering is hosted by
Miguel Castro, Miss Mycol, Sasha, Steve "Hef", and
Ryan Willing.
