Bits & Pieces
What a pleasure it was to trip on into Cocktail with some friends last month on a Tuesday night with DJ Michael Serafini in the DJ booth spinning some wicked house beats that you unfortunately hear far too infrequently on Boystown dance floors. Miss Foozie was a most gracious host, bartender Davide was too cute for words, and the Spank Go-Go Boys were HOT HOT HOT! Sunday nights at Minibar have really taken off thanks in part to the attentive and shirtless cocktail waiters. Adding to the festive environment is the energetic club music of resident DJ Chris Eterno and the consistent presence of a gorgeous crowd featuring sexy twinks, hunky men, and the ever affable Bill Pritchard of ChicagoPride.com. I checked out DJ Kimberly S. at Hydrate on the Sunday before New Year's Eve. Except for the unfortunate run-in with a group of about ten drunken straight girls (how often have you heard that at Hydrate?), my friends and I had a really fun time dancing and prancing to Kimberly's tribal house goodness.

A Look At The Dance Grammys
The 50th Annual Grammy Awards will be here soon, February 10th in Los Angeles to be exact, and as in previous years it's time that I take a look at the three dance music categories and share some thoughts.

Nominees for Best Dance Recording
"Do It Again" by The Chemical Brothers
"D.A.N.C.E." by Justice
"Love Today" by Mika
"Don't Stop The Music" by Rihanna
"LoveStoned/I Think She Knows" by Justin Timberlake

Following last year's win in this same category for "SexyBack," Timberlake is back with the stellar "LoveStoned ". However, given how white hot Rihanna is at the moment and the strength of "DSTM", I'd be surprised if you didn't take home the statue. And thank goodness the Academy had the wisdom to nominate this Rihanna goodie and not the much weaker "Umbrella."

Nominees for Best Electronic/Dance Album --
WE ARE THE NIGHT by The Chemical BrothersÝ by Justice
SOUND OF SILVER by LCD Soundsystem
WE ARE PILOTS by Shiny Toy Guns
ELEMENTS OF LIFE by Tiësto

While it's heartening and interesting to see Justice and Shiny Toy Guns nominated, this will probably be a battle between The Chemical Brothers and Tiësto, producers of two superlative artist albums that are both worthy nominees. While I have a long-term Chem Bros affinity, I've recently become a huge fan of trance-meister Tiësto, considered one of the best 2 or 3 DJs in the world for the past decade. Thus I'm hoping he squeaks out the victory here.

Nominees for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical
"Angelicus" (Andy Moor Mix) - Delerium
"Bring The Noise" (Benny Benassi Sfaction Remix) - Public Enemy
"Like A Child" (Carl Craig Remix) - Junior Boys
"Proper Education" (Eric Prydz Mix) - Eric Prydz Vs. Pink Floyd
"Sorry" (Dirty South Mix) Kaskade

While this is a decent group of nominees, the honest truth is that there were several other remixes that deserved to be nominated. Dirty South is one of the hottest remixers on the scene currently, but this treatment of "Sorry" isn't even close to being his best work of the past year. And I thought the Ferry Corsten remix of "Bring The Noise" deserved a nod ahead of Benassi Sfaction treatment. Anyway, I'm hoping Eric Prydz gets rewarded for his massive effort on "Proper Education." I'll never forget when I first heard the song, sampled from Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall," at the Pure Nation Dance Music Festival at Charter One Pavilion: the crowd went absolutely nuts when it was played. It still gets a tremendous dance floor response and could lead Prydz to the Grammy stage with an acceptance speech in hand.
